Am I at Risk for Infection After Heart Surgery?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recently issued a warning to heart surgery patients bringing attention to a possible slow-growing and life threatening infection related to heating and cooling devices used in some procedures.

During heart surgery, surgeons commonly utilize devices that assist in keeping the patient’s blood temperature stable and blood flow circulating. LivaNova PLC manufactured the Stockert 3T heater-cooler devices, and these devices could have been contaminated during the manufacturing process.

Some patients have experienced an infection related to the bacteria, Mycobacterium chimaera, a slow-growing bacteria that often takes months to manifest into health effects. Some of the infection-related symptoms include fever, fatigue, weight loss or general aches.

The CDC states that a large number of patients could be at risk to contamination, as these devices are used in approximately 60 percent of open heart procedures. As reported by CBS News, all patients who underwent open heart surgery before 2014 should be aware of this possible heart surgery infection and the related symptoms. To date, cases related to this issue have been reported in Pennsylvania, Iowa and Michigan, as well as in Europe.

The CDC has warned that despite thousands of patients being notified of the potential effects, the number who were exposed to the potential contamination and who would be at risk for infection might be much larger.
