Cracking Down on Tennessee's Distracted Drivers

Tennessee drivers need to be aware that beginning this week in mid-April, Tennessee Highway Patrol and local police will crack down on drivers they believe are distracted while driving. Whether you are texting while driving, doing your makeup or merely distracted while driving, you are likely to receive a ticket.

WMC-TV in Memphis filed a report on the “Thumbs Down campaign” detailing these actions as part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. The ramifications of receiving a ticket or citation for texting while driving or a similar act can result in a fine or possible suspension of your driver’s license for multiple violations.

As reported by The Commercial Appeal, law enforcement issued more than 22 tickets on Monday in a mere 45 minutes. Paul Atchley, a professor at The University of Kansas, is quoted in the article stating, "All the research we have available says that someone using a phone while driving is equivalent to or maybe worse than a drunk driver.”

Atchley continued, “There have been multiple studies that have looked at this. We have been doing research on phones in cars for 50 years. This is not a new research area. But when you compare a drunk driver to a distracted driver scenario, the drunk driver actually drives better.”

The dangers of texting and driving are real and are only increasing by the day. Serious injuries are occurring every hour in the Mid-South because drivers constantly pick up their phones.

You would think the mere act of putting your phone away while driving is simple. There shouldn’t be the need for a police crackdown on these cases. Unfortunately, we all know things are not always what they seem.

We hope the crackdown taken by the Tennessee Highway Patrol will manifest into daily enforcement. The only way to make a dent in the number of distracted drivers is to consistently issue tickets for such an offense.
