Decoding the Misconceptions about Criminal Defense Lawyers

The Chiozza Law Firm practices in all areas of the law, including Criminal Defense. While each specific area is different and carries with it unique issues, the one thing that remains the same is the desire to provide the best legal representation you can to each client. After many years of criminal defense work I have discovered that criminal clients want to know their attorney is doing everything possible to help them out of a difficult, and often agonizing, situation.

When most people her the phrase “Criminal Defense Attorney” they immediately think of murder or other heinous crimes and what they have seen over dramatized on television over the years. People forget criminal defense law also involves misdemeanor theft charges, speeding tickets, miscellaneous driving charges, drug charges, and a host of other charges that are deemed criminal in nature.

There are also instances where a person missed a designated court date and needs a warrant recall or simply wants to know whether past criminal transgressions can be removed from his/her criminal record through an expungement order.

It is these minor charges that typically make up a large portion of a criminal defense attorney’s workload. When faced with these crimes, a client will seek your guidance and advice with the hope that these charges can one day come off of his/her public record. Many clients would love to be found not guilty of their crimes, but they realize that given the facts this is not possible. Therefore, as an alternative, a client will hire a criminal defense attorney to negotiate the best possible deal that limits the punishment and minimizes the problems such charges can cause to their future.

People can and often do form their own opinion of criminal defense lawyers, or any lawyer for that matter, but invariably when faced with a legal problem or issue, they look to hire the best attorney they can find.  When a loved one or family member is in trouble, they come to our attorneys for advice on how to best handle a confusing and difficult situation.

Do I need a criminal defense attorney?

I would estimate that 90% of the time a person did not intend to commit a crime. They simply made a mistake, and there is not a person in the world that I am aware of that has never made a mistake.  Teenagers and young adults make plenty of mistakes, and unfortunately it sometimes involves breaking the law.  It is at this time that an experienced attorney will do everything possible to protect their client from having this mistake affect them forever.  Having a criminal charge on your permanent record can limit future job opportunities, strain personal and family relationships and deny your right to vote or carry a gun.

People also assume that criminal defense attorneys charge a fortune for representation.  This is true when defending an individual against extremely serious criminal charges that require all of your time and attention. Alternatively, we find that many clients facing typical criminal charges are pleasantly surprised at our fee quote and payment arrangements.
