Does Daylight Saving Time Increase Traffic Accidents?

Sun Rising Over Cars on InterstateMost people are probably still feeling the effects of Daylight Saving Time (DST) this week, forcing their bodies to adjust to the early and dark evenings. Studies have shown that the seasonal changes of Daylight Saving Time do produce an increase in traffic accidents and fatalities, especially the week or two following the change.

Benjamin Franklin is often erroneously credited with starting DST. In truth, Englishman William Willett proposed and fought for DST to be implemented. While it took many years to pass, the United States began the time saving tactic in 1918. What was thought to benefit American farmers and the agricultural industry has today had an adverse effect on our driving habits and safety.

In a study conducted by The University of Colorado Boulder found a 6.3 percent increase in traffic fatalities and accidents in the six day period following DST. The article also mentions data that revealed a 20 percent increase in accidents the Monday following DST, as compared to other Mondays throughout the year.
