How to Report Nursing Home or Elder Abuse in Tennessee

How to Report Nursing Home or Elder Abuse in Tennessee

With the Coronavirus pandemic drastically changing the healthcare system daily, it is even more important that we protect and care for the elderly. Sadly, the elderly are sometimes overlooked and mistreated by healthcare workers, friends, and even family. Knowing what to look for and how to properly report nursing home abuse and elder mistreatment is the first step in protecting our loved ones.

Signs of Nursing Home Abuse and Neglect

A quick recap from our previous post where we outlined signs of nursing home abuse and neglect revealed the following common sign one should look for:

  • Drastic mood swings or change in personality
  • Weight Loss
  • Unusual bruising or scarring
  • Bedsores
  • Unexplained changes to wills, power of attorney or sudden financial decisions

We also previously explored nursing home sexual abuse, where we advised to look for the following signs of such abuse:

  • Extreme Depression
  • Difficulty sitting, walking or other signs of sexual abuse
  • Torn or out of place clothing
  • Fear around a caregiver

What To Do If Your Loved One Is Suffering From Nursing Home Abuse

The State of Tennessee has several hotline numbers set up to assist those that believe a loved one is suffering from nursing home or elder abuse. To file a complaint against a nursing home you should contact a qualified nursing home abuse attorney at The Chiozza Law Firm and also call The Tennessee Department of Health at 1-877-287-0010

The State of Tennessee has also set up a hotline for reporting elder abuse. Tennessee is a mandatory reporting state, which means if you even suspect elder abuse, you must report the matter. If you suspect elder abuse, you can call Adult Protective Services at 1-888-277-8366 or the Tennessee Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-356-6767. In the Memphis and Shelby County area, you can report elder abuse cases by calling the Memphis Crisis Center at 901-274-7477.

The common goal we share with our clients is stopping, and hopefully preventing, nursing home care and elder abuse. We want to put you in touch with the proper authorities so that these cases of abuse and neglect are properly investigated. We will work with victims of abuse and their families to get the answers they deserve. The second you suspect abuse or neglect of a loved one, you must call 901-526-9494 to speak with a qualified Tennessee nursing home attorney.
