Broken IVC Filters – Call Immediately for Help

New Jersey medical device developer, C.R. Bard, is facing numerous lawsuits based on IVC Filters that were designed to help patients that are at a high risk to develop blood clots.  It is alleged that the manufacturer knew of serious, life-threatening complications related to the G2 Filter, and the associated higher risk of device “fracture,” but chose to market and sell the device rather than issuing a recall.

The Bard filters, spider-shaped in form, are implanted in the inferior vena-cava (the largest vein in the body), and assist in stopping blood clots from traveling to the lungs and heart, where these clots can potentially be fatal.

Blood clot filters are implanted in approximately 250,000 individuals per year.  Issues can occur when these filters “fracture,” thereby decreasing the ability to stop blood clots, as they were touted to do.  Such fractures leaving broken pieces of the device possibly traveling to other parts of the body and becoming lodged, possibly resulting in life-threatening complications.  When a fracture does occur a patient will have symptoms similar to a heart attack or severe chest pain, often resulting in immediate medical assistance to determine the issue.

With knowledge of complications in the design of these filters, C.R. Bard continued to allow the implant of the Bard Recovery filter or the Bard G2 filter, leaving patients at a higher risk for serious injury.

A broken filter can also lead to difficulty in the removal of said device, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism or a puncture of the inferior vena cavity.
