Memphis and the greater Mid-South have been devastated by a recent number of accidental gunshots to children who found guns in their homes. While we obviously agree with the right to bear arms and protect our families by any means necessary, the responsibility that goes along with gun ownership should never be taken lightly.
As reported by Fox 13 Memphis, we saw two children die and one critically injured by unprotected guns over the weekend. One injury is one too many, especially when you can take simple precautions for free and with very little effort.
If you are an individual who keeps a firearm in your home, please follow these steps:
Get a Gun Lock
ProjectChildSafe.org has a comprehensive list of agencies across Tennessee that provide gun owners with a free safety kit and help prevent unintentional firing of a weapon. This is especially important for owners of older weapons that may not have a lock/safety mechanism.
In Memphis, as reported by WREG, the Memphis Police Department offers free gun safety kits.
Get a Gun Safe
Get a gun safe that protects and secures your firearms. You can get them for under $20.
The money you spend on a gun safe far outweighs any consequences resulting from an accidental shooting.
Properly Dispose of Old/Unused Guns
We strongly recommend you contact your local law enforcement agency for directions related to properly disposing of unused weapons you no longer need.
The Chiozza Law Firm team wants to send our thoughts and prayers to the victims of these recent unintentional shootings. With more education, we hope the number of accidental shootings will decrease. One shooting is too many, so please share this, or similar articles mentioned above, to all gun owners.
Honestly, we believe there are never enough precautions that can be taken to safely secure weapons in a household where children are present.
