PTSD and Auto Accidents: What to Know

While most car accidents are minor and result in no discernable injuries, an accident can be so horrific with damages so significant that the involved parties suffer lifelong physical and emotional scars. One way emotional scarring can manifest itself is through Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

PTSD is a mental health condition sustained by individuals who have lived and suffered through an extremely traumatizing situation or accident. While the public is used to hearing the term, PTSD associated with war veterans, lawyers and medical providers alike are aware of accident victims dealing with this condition. If serious enough, PTSD can interrupt your daily life to varying degrees, sometimes causing overwhelming anxiety and fear.

Common symptoms of PTSD following an accident are:

  • Fear or anxiety while operating or riding in a vehicle
  • Depression
  • Insomnia or nightmare about the event
  • Severe mental anguish brought about by discussing the accident
  • Mood instability
  • Trouble concentrating or performing normal tasks

PTSD currently affects millions of people with close to 10 percent of auto accident survivors afflicted with some form of PTSD.

How does PTSD affect my legal claim?

PTSD is one of the many damages to be considered by your attorney.  To prove you are suffering with legitimate PTSD, you would need to be examined by an appropriate medical provider for diagnoses and treatment.

If you are diagnosed with a form of PTSD, this will be considered along with pain and suffering, medical expenses, lost wages, long term care costs, out-of-pocket expenses and any other related damages.
