The Importance of an Accident Report

Accident scenes can be agonizing, confusing and surreal all at the same time. An auto accident, pedestrian accident motorcycle accident or bicycle accident induces so much stress on the involved parties that, on occasion, they are unable to remember or articulate how the accident occurred.

Following an accident, we always recommend obtaining a report, which helps you in dealing with insurance companies and the other parties involved in the accident.

Barring emergency or extreme weather situations, the police come to the scene of an accident to fill out a report for you. While it may occasionally take time for an officer to arrive, it is always worth the wait, especially if you were not at fault.

Report the accident by calling The Memphis Police Department at 901-545-COPS (2677). A police report provides the necessary proof for insurance companies to assist in investigating the claim. Without a report, involved parties can change their stories or “misremember” facts, making it difficult to determine who was responsible for the accident.

I cannot stress the importance of having a properly documented police report!

The report also lists the names and contact information of any witnesses who were interviewed following the accident. It will also contain a description of property damage, date, time and a diagram of the accident scene.

You can obtain a copy of your accident report by calling Central Records (901) 636-3650 or an attorney at The Chiozza Law Firm will obtain a copy for you.
