What Is Booking and Processing in Memphis Jails?

cuffs and gavel

Typically, when an individual is physically arrested for a crime or is issued a misdemeanor citation in Memphis, TN, he/she will go through a process called booking and processing. Booking in processing is a way for the courts to obtain relevant and personal information about a Defendant prior to their first court appearance. The booking and processing procedure will also allow the courts to put defendants into the court’s database for future reference and identification.

Getting Booked

When one is booked and processed into the Memphis jail the following will occur:

  • A photograph is taken of the defendant
  • Defendant’s fingerprints will be taken
  • Personal information, such as full name, date of birth, address, contact information, and social security number will be documented.

All the above information will then be included in a Defendant’s criminal court file. This information will assist the presiding Judge and Prosecutors in reviewing your case. If you are physically arrested at the scene you will immediately be taken to jail for booking and processing.

Getting Processed In Memphis, TN

In Shelby County, if you were issued a misdemeanor citation in lieu of arrest then your booking and processing will typically occur the morning of your first court appearance. Many clients are afraid they will be taken to jail on his/her booking date, but that is not usually the case. In Memphis, with most cases starting at the General Sessions Criminal Court level, you will be booked and processed the same morning as your initial court date and then told to proceed to your designated courtroom for the arraignment following the booking and processing. At the arraignment, you will usually be informed of the crimes and punishment you are facing and be provided a Public Defender or allowed time to obtain the services of a private attorney.
